So... Was at the 30STM show in Grand Prairie, TX the other night & saw people doing the little hands-in-the-air-devil-horns gesture. That has always puzzled me because I associate it with:
1) Cheesy heavy metal kids in the 80's trying to be all "satanic" or something
2) "Hook 'em Horns" since I grew up around Texans & now live in Texas.
3) The Pagan symbol for the Horned God/Cernunnos - often used as a warding gesture against evil, etc.
I see this at every show & it always makes me kind of cringe. It just seems to have nothing to do with anything - not just with 30STM, but with many bands I see. Yet people insist upon doing it, probably because they see everyone else doing it & don't know what else to do.
Fortunately Jared seems to have been phasing out the "Put your fingers in the air just like this..." thing the last few shows I've been too. Never really understood that one either...
So, in a moment of slightly inebriated inspiration during stage setup, I came up with a new, more appropriate hand gesture. I enjoyed having something to do other than random hand-waving that also means something. Figured some others might like it or at least get a giggle out of it. (And I am curious to see if I can get it to catch on. My past experience with such things has been that half the people doing something have no idea what it's all about, but start doing it because they think it must be some secret thing that all the cool kids are doing. Hehe.)
So, here ya go. (Takes some practice to get it automatic without a lot of adjusting, and getting your last 2 fingers tucked in sort of hurts, but I think it looks cool. Or at least looks pretty clearly like what it's supposed to! I'm trying to figure out a variation that doesn't require quite so much flexibility, though. Haha. Feel free to add modifications or ideas.)
