As for True Blood, I've seen the first 7 episodes of season 1 and should be getting the next disc from Netflix today. I don't think the show, as a whole, is amazing, but it drew me in and is keeping me hooked.

Firstly, it's set in backwoods Louisiana, not LA, or NY, or some other glamourous, glittery locale. Like the Twilight saga, it uses something other than flash to convey its story. Being set in such a rural place, it makes for some very interesting characters. I like that it depicts small town life accurately (as far as I'm concerned, anyways), with everyone congregating at Merlotte's every night for food and booze. Most of the young men work at the same job (Jason's construction company), and most of the girls work at the bar. I get the impression that Bon Temps is tiny, with only a handful of residents.
Secondly, the world knows about vampires, which is something that hasn't really been explored yet in popular culture. Like any minority, they are being persecuted. There are those who are with them, and those who are against them (i.e. Jesus camp). They don't have to hide in the shadows in True Blood (well, maybe a little). And in addition to the general populace being aware of vampires' existence, they've flipped the coin and made humans crave vampires' blood, because of the stimulant properties 'V' has. So in a society where the killers have been outed, and many are trying to live as peacefully as possible within humanity, you have humans who are hunting them and taking THEIR blood from them. Sometimes, the vampires die. It's a nice reversal on the vampire mythos.
Thirdly, I love that there are other supernatural elements in the series, but they aren't really in your face about it. Sookie is a mind reader. Sam easily changes shape from man to dog, but it's not a spectacle. In the second season, we see Maryann, who is either a witch, or a God of some sort, who seems to be able to release people's inhibitions and lust... why? I don't know yet.
A friend of mine at work compared the show to Twilight, and I had to disagree with her. She said they were very similar. Maybe in the fact that it has the same general formula, 'human girl falls in love with vampire', but this show is SOOOO much more complex than Twilight. The vampires here are responsible for those they turn, they have a law system with each district having its own 'sheriff' (Eric).... Plus, as I said, having the whole dynamic of humankind being aware of their existence on the whole sets it completely apart from much other vampire fiction.
I didn't mean to ramble, I just thought it would be good to add some sort of substance to the thread to get the ball rolling.

Pisces: If you want another series where the vampires are known to general society give the Anita Black books by Laurell Hamilton a try. That one also has great characters and interesting dynamics between them

The second season doesn't seem to have the cut-throat pace that the first season had but it's still highly enjoyable. I love how the fringe characters almost over shadow the leads (I mean Sookie and Bill) at times. Lafayette is my favourite character.
Sometimes Sookie is a bit bi-polar in her emotions and reactions which tries my patience a tad but then I have to remind myself that she's learning the rules as she goes ... just wish she'd exhibit a bit more of the bubbly, open-minded Sookie from the first few episodes.
Hoyt and Jessica are my favourite (brand new) storyline at the moment.
Bring on the next episode!!
PS: Do we have to spoiler episode stuff or is this kind of like the Heroes and Lost thread where it's assumed you keep up and read at your own risk?

Can't wait till season 2 starts here in Brazil.
I thought about reading the books, but I don't know if it's really worth it. (You see, I only like to read books in english (when the author wrote them in english, of course), they seem wrong when they're translated to another language.. but imported books are kinda expensive and this series is made of nine books, right? That's a loooot of money.)

The books are amazing and the serial is to good too.
I've been thinking these days about open one thread about this
By the moment I only read completly the first book. I'm reading the second and I will read the third (because I'm reading in spanish and in Spain there are only 3 books now). I'm watching the serial in english, the first season. Please, don't put so much spoiler about the second and the third book

I've only asked for spoilers when people talks about the plot on the books since I recently started reading them, but if it's about the TV show, I think we all are at the same episode? (S02E03)

For me, True Blood is... what Twilight should have been. It's much more interesting and the characters are actually developed.
I've spent the last week watching the episodes on my computer starting at 1 in the morning. Woo-hoo?
I haven't seen any of season 2 yet, but I'll get on that right away!
Does anyone else completely LOVE Lafayette?

I would have started a True Blood thread a long time ago but I was afraid of getting my head ripped of by the rabid Twilight fans

I was watch that episode yesterday!
That's awsome! XD
What I like about the saga, is that sookie is not the tipic girl who love desperately to ''her'' vampire. Ok, she ''loves'' him, but she can be without him. And he's the perfect vampire : sexy, pale but attractive, bad but kind.
And Lafayette is awsome, I love that guy
