There was a debate in the House of Commons earlier this week regarding the current residency rules for Gurkhas, the brave men that have fought for Great Britain in several wars. Under current regulations Gurkhas must serve at least 20 years military service in order to settle in the UK, despite the fact that many are only able to do 15 unless they become an officer.
There was an article in the Daily Mirror (UK newspaper) regarding this as well as a website address www.theyworkforyou.com where you could go and type in your postcode and find your local MP. People were then asked to e-mail their local MP and ask them to vote for the Gurkhas in the Commons debate. In the debate there was overwhelming support for the Gurkhas and the current rules are now being reviewed. However, it is just this, a review and there is no guarantee there will be any amendments to the existing rule.
How can our Government ask these soldiers to stand by our side during conflict but turn their backs on the same men when it is convenient to do so and deny them the right to live in the country they have fought for, been injured for and in some cases died for. The petty bureaucracy which invents residency rules that Gurkhas must serve 'at least' 20 years service KNOWING that the majority of soldiers can only serve 15. Surely these men, some that now face deportation, deserve better treatment than this?
In the meantime please continue to contact your MP via the website www.theyworkforyou.com and there is also an online petition to sign www.gurkhajustice.org.uk
Please sign this petition and get justice for these brave men that fought and risked their lives for the UK but are unable to claim the right to live here. Please also continue to contact your local MP asking for their continued support.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, Jem x

I thought I would add this link in case anyone would like to read about the Gurkhas, who they are and why it is crucial the residency rules are changed in order for them to settle in the UK.
