I can't believe that there was a story about being Emo on the news. That would never happen in the UK.

My only problem with this story is that they are saying that kids who wear black and eyeliner are Emo and that it is directly responsible for self harming and suicide. Looks to me like they are almost trying to make Emo a scapegoat for other problems. If you are going to kill it is because you have deep-seeded problems, you are not going to do it just because a song told you to. People have been wearing black and eyeliner for years, suicide and self harming has been going on for years and suddenly this is all happening because kids are turning Emo? That doesn't quite work for me.

I listen to a lot of 'Emo bands' but I would not class myself as one, so this is not a defence of something that I am into, just of something I find unfair.

I was emo before the word emo was associated with these kids.

This subject really annoys me, I am a youth worker and work closely with young people who have issues or problems. Most kids self harm because of peer pressure, bullying, parental problems, not one kid i have come across in the last 10 yrs has ever cut themselves because of the music they listen to or clothes that they wear. the majority of kids i get have self harmed and i would say about 5% have worn goth/emo clothing and listen to. Adults put self harming down to goth/emo because its a get out of jail free card for themselves.

Emo stands for Emotional well in that case everyone in the whole f*~king world is emo because i have never come across a human who is a robot and has no feelings. I appoligise for the rant but people always have to blame anything other than themselves.
I'M EXTREMELY EMO right now!

what annoys me the most is that they're using MCR as background music and showing clips of MCR, AFI, The Used... err, yeah, alright.

Quite often because they don't want to admit the kids are self harming because they are being abused at home.

I also agree with you on this one smile.gif

I have SOOOO many thoughts on 'emo' and what it is, but I think I may just go on and on and bore you all!

So i'll just say, emo is probably dead. It probably died back in the mid-90's. Nowadays, it's just scene kids, posers and wannabes walking around. (Well, that's what it's like over here in England!)

That's referring to emo as a sort of...style. But if you're referring to it as 'emotional,' what it really stands for, then yes, everyone is emo! tongue.gif

Ha! My husband has my daughter's phone number programmed in his cell as "EMOLY" instead of Emily. She really isn't....but her friends ...they're another story!

Whatever happened to being goth? sad.gif
Goths are depressed and sensitive too.

That "news report" is the most ridiculous thing that I have seen lately. They're taking all the shit they find on the internet so seriously. Quiz? Woosh, its a joke.

Oh well..that's just about as lame as possible..but it's nothing new. Judas Priest had to go to court because some idiots tried to kill themsleves and blamed it on their music. One did die and the other blew his face off, or something like that. The "danger" of the heavy metal culture!!!

One of my stepkids dated a cutter, she wasn't "emo", but the child of super repressed religious fanatics.

I got a feeling that every generation back to caveman days had some fear about a "cult" that their kids belonged to.

Clearly, you don't watch the news.

... Or read the guardian.
