Hey all, just joined and thought I'd say hello with a question.

Anyone know if 30 Seconds to Mars is ever planning on making more SK stories into music videos? They did an awesome job with "The Shining" - love to see one for "The Stand" or "Carrie" smile.gif

Love their music, and Jared Leto's acting career.

I don't think they did it so much because it was King's...I think they based it on Kubrick's adaptation of "The Shining"

I agree. But yet, there's something about this entire band that reminds me veyr much of King's Gunslinger series. I can never seem to put my finger on exactly what it is. (It has nothing to do with the fact that I now can only imagine Eddie Dean as Jared, either. Or rather the other way around. biggrin.gif ) The whole symbology, the entire "questing" vibe I get from the band, the intense "ka-tet" they have, and something else much more nebulous. I often wonder if they've read that series. But it's just a feeling I have.

I haven't ever read The Dark Tower books. My mom read the first few when I was a teenager and didn't like them so I never tried...but maybe I'll go check them out...they're supposed to be fantastic...

I adore King. =) But I digress...unless anyone wants to make this thread about King.

Tomo would make an excellent Susannah, what with him being a black woman with no legs.

The first book was a total drag; it was like homework trying to get through it. King went back and retrofitted some stuff after the completion of the series, but it's still kind of a drag. Too bad there's some essential stuff in there, otherwise I'd say skip it and go on to the second one, which is much more fun and interesting.

I completely agree. I hated the first one to the point that I still question why I contined on. But I did. What an amazing ride it turned out to be. Unfortunately I read them in '99 and had to wait 4-5 years to get the rest of the books. I have read them twice now. I get so sucked in I can't think of anything else when I have to take a break to go to work or whatever.

I remember taking the books to work, too, and sneaking in a few pages when no one was around. It was so addicting. I totally cried through the last book.

The worst part of finishing the books? No one I personally know will take the time to read them. Except for my husband who started years before me and just finished "Susannah." I had no one with whom to discuss what I discovered once I reached the tower.

And did anyone really quit reading when he told us to?

Personally, I love King's short stories. "Nightmares and Dreamscapes", "Four Past Midnight", "Different Seasons"...love it.

No, and he totally pissed me off with his attitude at the end of that final book. "I wrote the end, but if you read it, you are such a loser who is no good at sex! Figure out your own ending!" Umm, if you didn't want to us read it, you didn't have to write it! And why should I make up my own ending? You're the writer, do your job! Damn. He got up my nose with those comments.

But yes, the series was one of the best ever. happy.gif

I'd love them to do a video based on "Carrie". Perhaps they could be the band playing at the prom. smile.gif

Band playing at the prom would be gay as hell. Perfect for MTV, though.

And the DT books are my favorite books of all time. Makes LOTR look childish.

I hated the way he made himself the "creator of the universe" or whatever he thought he was doing. He was very egotiastical. I wish I could shoot spaghetti out of my fingers at him.

However, it was also entertaining as well. After all, it IS his world and he did create it. So I guess he has the right.

Yeah, I know. I think he tried to make himself a realistic, uhh, figure and all, but it was still very "Hi, I'm Stephen King and I can do whatever I want." He's gotten that way with a handful of his books, actually.

OTOH, who am I to argue with genius? wink.gif I still love that crazy bastard.

I agree - he really shines in his short stories.

After reading a bit, I guess they did do it off the movie - and yet, so much of it stuck to the book!

If I knew Jared, or anyone from 30StM, I would give him a pat on the back for making an awesome music video. He would also be good in a SK movie; any of them.

agreed...i say his best works are his short stories...they are more, "saturated" with all that good stuff that i like about king...did that make sense?...anyways, i'm more a big fan of those and his older works, like "carrie" and "the running man", and of course, "the shining".

I could never read one of his massive epics like "The Stand". I tried to read "Dreamcatcher" but severely lost interest in the middle...

Short stories are the way to go. I don't even mind some of his smaller books, but yeah, you'll never catch me reading one of those huge mothers.

I also like to read his pop culture editorial on the last page of Entertainment Weekly magazine every week. It's enlightening. I also read "On Writing" which I consider to be a bible of sorts for a horror writer (which is what I am trying to be)....

I want to write a story a la King for my mom, who loves the man.

Haha! that was me exactly! but to be honest I haven't finished the series yet. I have Wolves of the Calla on my book shelf. I thought they were all great books so far. In my opinion, his best work.

**edit**

thats how he ended it!?!? Omg what a cop out. That is really disappointing to know, cause the series really was so good, now i want to go finish it and see what this all is about.

I love the Dark Tower series. I started reading it in high school. Then he took so long between book releases I thought he would never finish it. I got my husband hooked a couple of years ago and I was so jealous. He read the whole thing in a couple of months. I had to read it over the span of twenty years. I also love The Stand.
When I want to be scared I have to go back to his earlier stuff. His early stuff is definitely raw horror .
