Ok so this is kinda random, but so I am graduating College next friday. My degree is in History...I am such a nerd. I totally wanted to work with Archives and museum's, but now I dont think so...not for a while at least.
Anyways, my last year in college I began writing for our college newspaper (we have 45,000 students if that gives you an idea of the scale). Anyways so I feel in LOVE with writing and I think I would really like to break into Media some how.
I was thinking about writing for Newspapers, like music reviews and stuff, but I think I would have a better shot at indie type magazines. Any suggestions?
Edit: Oh and in case anyone cares I won $50 on a scratch off lotto ticket last night...and I am using all the money on 30stm stuff...mwahahahahahahaha :end edit

well I do have a music site. An e-zine. We're always looking for music reviews. If you want to write for us you can. Though I do the site for free and most of the writers are volunteers who don't really get paid for it.

look at freelance writing sites-you'll find some paid or not paid gigs and ge tyour portfolio going
I write freelance for mostly astrology publications like Llewellyn's Moon Sign, Herbal and other almanacs and some music related stuff
magazine work is not easy to make aliving at from what I know
maybe keep a day or night job and work on your writing the other times
and good luck
some of my stuff is at www.llewellynjournal.com

I graduated from college last year with a BA in Creative Writing with a minor in print journalism. I wanted to go into writing and editing for magazines/newspapers, but found it's one of the hardest industries to get into! However, since you have written for your college's newspaper, you will have a huge advantage since you will have clips. I wrote a lot of articles for my newspaper and magazine courses, but unfortunetly, that does not count in the industry. I did, however, write an article for an online 'zine back in 2003. Most magazines and newspapers require at least 4 to 5 clips of published work. I would suggest freelancing as well. I'm little by little trying to get back into the swing of things and start checking out the freelancing opportunities, but I work full-time at a non-related job to pay my bills so I don't have that much time.
Anyway, sorry to ramble on, but there is a site called http://www.freelancewriting.com that is really helpful. If you have ideas for a particular magazine, you can write to their managing editor for more information. Also, check out Writer's Digest, they post a lot of contests and freelance opportunities in the back of their magazine (it's also a great magazine for all writers).
Hope this is helpful!

Thanks so much that is very helpful info. I wish now that I had doubled degreed with History and Journalism. I also have a few other things published as well and currently in my job I edit some books for Graduate Professors so maybe that will help me.
Thanks!

www.guru.com is another good site you could join for freelance work.
If you have a particular genre of magazine in mind I would suggest contacting a variety about the possibilty of an internship - you don't get paid but you do get a chance to build up some useful contacts.
