O.K. before I get killed here I just want to ask for some clarification on the Echelon. What exactly does it mean to be a part of that? I have been a hardcore fan for a couple of years and on the boards for about 7 mos but I don't consider myself worthy to be Echelon. Is there an initiation I would have to go through, a blood in, blood out kind of thing? Just wondering because my cousin saw a car the other day in Dallas with all the 30STM stickers on it and such and she asked me. I didn't really know how to explain it. LOL

Nowadays, being in the Echelon means nothing as everyone uses the term as much as they want.

Yep, the band has bastardized our street team.

It was the streetteam, but now it seems pretty much just a fan of 30stm. I remember reading that Shannon said they called the hardcore fans Echelon. So it was a street team, but now it seems kinda like what parrotheads are to Jimmy Buffett, but a lot cooler.

The term Echelon used to be strictly for the street team - the ones who promote 30 Seconds to Mars. However, it does seem that a lot of new fans are adopting the term Echelon as simply being a fan (who doesn't do any kind of promotion). 'Tis sad. sad.gif

I agree with what has just been posted. I've busted my ass for this band and being called an Echelon nowadays just feels like another fan.

O.K. Thanks, that's what I thought but I didn't know how to explain it. Can I be an apprentice Echelon if I have given people their CD and dragged people to shows, who of course end up loving them? I'm like one of those Hari Chrisnas at the airport handing out flyers for 30. hehe

Well, Envy, by doing that you've already done more than many of those wannabe "Echelon" everyone was just talking about. Lol apprentice, sounds good cool.gif

There used to be a difference but we don't really see it anymore nowadays. Yes, also thanks to the band themselves, you are absolutely right, ERIC *grovels some more* sad.gif

Envy, isn't there anyone in your area you could hook up with for some promo work?

When I joined I only put Echelon under my name because I joined to actually do promotions. Otherwise I wouldn't ahve done so, because that is the impression I got, that the Echelon was the street team and you had to work for the right to use that.

(still waiting on materials at the moment)

Edit:

I would also add that since I joined the boards long after being a fan I feel like a baby Echelon member...i.e. Echelon in training...maybe I should change my sign to reflect that...hmmmm

didn't read all these replies, but I beleive it still means you work to promote the band in various ways, promoting at other bands shows, putting up flyers, posting bulletins, whatever ways you can
and that you are connected with your local group

Promotion.

Currently I do mine online, message boards, emails etc Bore the pants off friends and family. If at all possible I also try a reference to the band's name into articles and stories for publication.

I live in the middle of nowhere at the moment, so RW promo, flyers etc are out - unless I walk out into the campo and stick them on carob trees and prickly pears for the goatherders to read.

Moving back to Dublin in September though so will be hitting the streets, clubs and pubs with stickers, flyers etc big time. Really looking foward to it.

See I always thought that Mars Army was for people who are fans while Echelon is for people who actually promote. But now it seems that Echelon is all the fans and Mars Army has kind of disappeared.

That's what I'm thinking. Who gives a fuck about some stupid title, anyways? Promote them if you want, or don't...but don't get wrapped up in what you're supposed to call yourself.

I call myself 'supporter'.

I still use the "Join the Mars Army" phrase.

Just because.
