Which guitarist is the most irreplacable to you, and more importantly to guitar playing today, and why?

I, personally, chose Jimi Hendrix. Known mostly for his crazy showmanship, and for songs like "Foxie Lady," "Purple Haze," and his rendition of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," I prefer to remember him for his abilities on songs like "May This Be Love (Waterfalls)." It shows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this man was at once in touch with both the electronic and showman side of things, but also deeply in tune with music itself. His timing is absolutely amazing, and his feel is ethereal. Obviously taken before his time, the things he was launching himself into would have gone beyond all bounds, I believe.

P.S. I intentionally left Chuck Berry off of here, as I thought it was too obvious.

Then, Django Reinhardt, rolleyes.gif old, dusty, but magic.

I think everyone of them is important. I can't pick just one. I can say that I listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn a LOT, though. As a classical guitarist, I was really happy to see Andre Segovia in the list. smile.gif

I would add Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt, Jennifer Battan, and my good friend Steve Blaze. Blaze is not real well known, but should be. I've been listening to him since I was about 14 years old, and he's really just an amazing musician. Not biased or anything. cool.gif

I like Hendrixs dedication to the music he is playing.

As much as I wanted to vote Stevie Ray Vaughan, I had to go with Thurston Moore. Now, instead of listening to Rather Ripped or something, I'll probably listen to Texas Flood.

Hendrix was amazing, but I need really liked listening to his music. "Red House" was just unintresting.

So, I put Jimmy Paige, since I actually listen to Led Zeppelin on a regular basis.

I put Jimmy Page also.

I would also like to add Mark Knopfler as one of my favorites.

Damn, that's tough.

I'm going to have to go with other, and list Brian May of Queen as my pick. There's just always been something about his playing that makes me go, "It's air guitar time."

haha. im lying.

I said lifeson. I dunno why. hasn't really influenced me that much, but minus the vocals Rush's pretty badass.
I wanted to vote Stevie Ray Vaughn as well. He was craziness.

Another vote for Brian May here . . . although never in a million and a half years will I ever be able to even come CLOSE to playing like he does.

Hell, I can barely play NOW! laugh.gif

Alex Lifeson is pretty good . . . I can stand a couple of Rush songs, but Geddy Lee's vocals make me cringe (don't shoot me!). 2112 is excellent though, IMHO.

Eddie Van Halen I like too . . .

It was real hard to just pick one . . . so yeah, Other kinda covered it! wink.gif

Intensely hard to choose, I grew up on Led Zep, so of course Jimmy Paige is a god to me, but I've been into blues since I was 11 and there's no one that quite sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughan. Although he's not necessarily well known, I'd also like to say the playing of Jeff Martin (canadian, ex-Tea Party) is seriously admirable.
