eh i kinda disagree with SW and NIN...they dont really sound similar in the fact that SW make constructed songs based around guitars and melodies (most of the time) and well NIN just kinda are poppy trancy dance mush, and their songs are based around the lyrics and trent...I like NIN dont get me wrong...but they are way too dance oriented then what people give them credit for. industrial? not quite...maybe mainstream dance industrial? filter is just a rip off of NIN until richie turned gay...then they kinda got away from the whole NIN thing.
but ya gotta remember SW, filter, and NIN were all big around the same time...so obviously the labels have something to say about that...because that was what was "IN" at the time. so thats the sound that sold records. so i can see where you relate them all together.
but to get more specific about my preceeding post--the construction of the songs are very similar...30stm and sw...the vocal arrangements...and melodies and the way they both sing soft at parts...then scream...its very similar. then the guitars are very stripped down in both bands. i dont know...does this make sense?

HMMM thats kinda funny...
http://www.officialfilter.com/music.php short bus was released in 1995...
and...UNGOD was released 15th February 1994--UNGOD...
so maybe filter copied SW?

Anyway, I kind of pick up on the SW and 30 STM comparison, but like someone else mentioned I felt more of a comparison could be made between SW and NIN. [sorry if I'm being annoying with the abbreviations] It's too bad SW broke up I really liked their music. Though, the lead singer is back in a band called The Dreaming. They had a song on the Elektra soundtrack, very Stabbing Westwardish.

all i gotta say is stabbing westward was the shit! i love chris voice. i wish i could find a singer like that...sing so softly and scream like that! intense shit.
i dont care who ripped off who or whatever about those songs---cuz lets face it ---that happens ALL THE FUCKIN TIME! look at rage against the machine--know your enemy! they stole that riff from edgar winter i believe...I think the song was frankenstein...ahh holy hell i dont expect anyone to know that song. hahaha i could name tons of bands that ripped off songs. who cares.

I know...I said the release dates might differ, but I know that the songs were written around the same time. Kinda like how a lot of the stuff on 30STM new CD was written well before the release date of the CD
