Okay...I don't mean this in a bitchy way at all, but it irks me to no end when common words are misspelled or misused. I just thought a nice friendly spelling (and let's not forget grammar) lesson would help.

There, They're and Their

Three different words with three entirely different meanings.

There - The positioning/existence of something (i.e. "It's over there"/"There is this restaurant that I know of, which has great French fries.")
They're - A contraction for THEY ARE. (i.e. "They're going to be sorry that they missed the concert.")
Their - Referring to the possession of an object/feeling/etc. of somebody or a group of people (i.e. "Their faces expressed their sorrow.")

Your, You're

Oh dear. So often mistakenly interchanged.

Your - possession, again. "Your mother." (commonly referred to as "Yo' momma"). "Your book." "Your belief"

You're - A contraction for YOU ARE. (You're stupid, you're ignorant, you're a dipshit, you're a fool, etc. I used those examples because they seem to be the only thing on this board that "you're" is used for)

Commas - used for pauses in sentences, and only where they make sense.
Periods - used to end FULL SENTENCES (as in not fragments of whole sentences).

I honestly am not writing this to be an ass...I really think it's sad to see so many people who have gone through years of schooling/life use the incorrect word (not people here necessarily - just people in general). And yes, the bottom line is that it's just a stupid pet peeve of mine. (Which reminds me of "it's" and "its"...I'll leave those for homework!). So I apologize in advance to anyone who will take offense to that.

-- edit -- I forgot to mention to add in anything you think goes under this thread...

i have nothing to add as of right now other than a big THANK YOU for letting me know I'm not the only one pissed off by people's blatant lack of knowledge when it comes to writing...or typing I guess....

Harhar, nice ; ) I would say that the major problem is that the pronunciation of ''their'' and ''there'' is exactly the same. The Pronunciation is probably the most difficult thing about the English language.
Well, whatever...a question :

Period is the american word for ''fullstop'' ? A ''.'' ? ^^

Ok, good. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was being a little anal when I would read something and wince because of all the spelling and grammatical errors that had occurred, but now I know I am not alone.

PROOFREAD PEOPLE...it takes like three seconds.

Ok. I know I'm not perfect in this area, but. I'm pretty damn good at using words right, and spelling them correctly. But this lesson I'll heed indeed.

Yes, Syrael, 'period' is the word for "fullstop". To both you and Maria Jose and others for whom English may not be their first language, I commend you on your efforts. The sad thing is that it's not even really you folk who are committing the crimes! I was originally even going to say something along the lines of this post not being intended for you guys and girls, because honestly you're 2 steps ahead of most of us, I would say, by being bi-, tri-, etc lingual.

I totally understand that English has all these weird concepts/pronunciations for new learners to grasp, but I just think that for those who KNOW the language and have grown up on it, there should not be errors such as these. And of course I'm not saying they're ignorant for doing so - maybe they were never taught. Like I said, I see this everywhere - I didn't mean it's just a problem here. I just finished my B.Sc. and there were some horrible peer-written papers that I unfortunately had the displeasure of reading. All that's needed here is a simple understanding of what you are trying to say.

That said, I don't much like contractions since they more often than not are used incorrectly.

Wincing is definitely something that is done periodically as I peruse posts.

Well the mods apparently are big fans of proper grammar, as this topic is now pinned!

OMFG i  simply cannot believe this topic is pinned! My info topic isn't and this gets pinned..something is wrong with this picture.  How fucking GHEY!!!  If someones spelling on the fucking internet bothers you so much then you don't fucking belong on the internet at all!  Jesus H christ.

First off, I didn't even know about pinning. This isn't a post popularity contest. If "pinning" is to highlight "important" topics and the MODS pinned this, then obviously the GHEYNESS of it all bothers them too...

And it's not that it bothers me to the point I'm going to commit suicide. The whole POINT of me writing this stuff was to HELP people, as I stated a few times. I'm not knocking anyone, and nor was ANYONE who replied. Nobody even knocks the spelling and usage of words in posts anyways. This wasn't meant to single people out. If you are pissed about it, that's fine. I merely did it because clearly some things weren't taught in school.

QUOTE
What the hell is wrong with you people?? IT'S a MESSAGE BOARDDDDDDDDDD!!! Some of these kids are from other countries and stuff....maybe alot of people can't spell.. why make it such a big deal? EVER hear of  dyslexia?

I quote myself again:

"Dyslexia" is COMPLETELY not the point here. Maybe I titled this thread wrong; maybe you didn't read the posts correctly. There is a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference in they're there and their, its and it's, than and then, etc. Nobody else who replied took any offense to this - I don't know why you had to. You make it seem like a posting competition. Once again, if the Mods themselves pinned this topic, it MUST mean that they too don't like to see incorrect usage of English. And I never once said this was aimed at any specific group. In fact, I specifically ruled OUT "kids from other countries". Not only that, but I PRAISED them for speaking English quite well. For those of us born and bred in the Western world, brought up on English, and who are not dyslexic or have learning disabilities, there should be no excuse as to why our English is so poor.

This is really really sad... I mean, do you even realize? Honest to god can't believe you even made this topic. sad sad sad.

I'm sorry, Diane, but what exactly is so sad about merely trying to help others?? You think if these kids continue using their in place of there on their resumes that they are going to get hired??

There is so much garbage on these message boards (bickering, SWEARING, crude and crass words, etc.) and you're knocking me for taking the liberty, and apparently speaking on behalf of many others, to HELP those who otherwise presumably would not have known these things??

I'm sorry for the crimes of spreading knowledge and wishing to help others.

And i see you there now. spare me the fucking novel.  rolleyes.gif

this is ludicrous. unbelievable. shameful. What's even more sad is the asshole mod pinning it.  rolleyes.gif grow up. Take YOUR fucking pet peeve and stick it up YOUR ANUS hole!

I think that the sad thing here is your unwarranted reaction to this. I did write a novel; you might want to check it out.

For being such a delight you sure as hell swear a lot. I'm not making this personal - why are you?

The ironic thing is that I AM grown up, and can obviously prove it through my correct usage of the English language.

The idea, once again, behind the topic was NOT because it was a pet peeve. It's because from reading the horrible grammar on this message board, I realized that some people just genuinely DO NOT KNOW when to use a certain word and when it makes completely no sense.

And yeah, the mod is clearly an asshole for pinning this.
