Please remember that digital/internet efforts are intended for all audiences, fans new and old. Let's concentrate on what works for all walks of life, and not just the average Forum member who may visit daily and/or be in the complete know of All Things Mars.
FYI: if I don't happen to respond pin-pointedly to a post here, think nothing of it. I'd rather hear what you all have to say.
And just a reminder: this topic solely focuses on the internet realm.

mobile phone is what most have at hand, at any given time and most service plans provide hundreds of free texts per month. easy and cheap for the target market/s, to introduce the band to them and possibly do a bit of promo themselves, as well.

you know like the top 40 etc...i'm not sure if they are, but if they are based on sales in the week ALONE, what if we all decided to buy the next single during the SAME week, instead of spread out, cos that would maximise the single's chance of being higher in the charts....
if we all waited and bought it at the same time then maybe we can get it high in the charts so more people would hear/see it
just a thought, but it depends on whether the charts are of sales/downloads in the week or cumulative, which i don't know.....
sorry if this is a stupid suggestion XD

I've heard about that, and it's great that you're assessing what's effective in your region.

Not stupid at all. I think that the effort to do just that has been a focus -- after all, when K&Q was being released, promotions toward it's release date and pre-purchase were cranked real high. You may be right, though, and maybe we can pull together collectively to really make the next single shoot right up to the top. It's also a thing about availability, too, though. That's the downside. (Not everyone may get the opportunity to purchase it the same day/week.)

Helios,
I think you all are doing a fantastic job. You help rally the troops when there is a radio station in need of a nudge or voting to be done. Thank you!! My only suggestion would be if ALL Echelon were encouraged to have an avatar depicting the band in some way (ex: faces of mars, glyphs etc.) It was awesome when voting for Best of Twitter to see how many Echelon were on there being voted in by their family. I think having these avatars will help promote the band and get questioned by non family members as to what the symbols represent etc. No offense but I also think Echelon should use more band pictures instead of one individual band member, if they don't want to use there own face.
Provehito in altum!

No problem at all. Constructive feedback is good, exactly what we need to hear. What would you consider balanced? Example: less frequent, less repetitious, etc.

Jill - the war is coming... tomorrow... december 8th 2009... 30 Seconds to Mars... this is war... (status update)
friend - I can't wait
Jill - really? i dont really picture you as a 30 fan... but the new album is... different. in a good way though. ;-)
friend - Actually you got me into them. lol After seeing them on your myspace I downloaded some stuff. I saw them and really enjoyed the show.
Jill - dude no way? thats awesome! =) the first cd is fucking awesome, second is pretty good, just know this isnt really like either... which show did you go to? i was probably there! they are awesome live, so i assume you will hit up more shows in the area when they come back??
mind you, back in the day, he was a huge death metal head, and apparently still is, why is why it was kinda shocking he liked them enough to see them. i thought it was pretty damn cool.

yayyy it wasn't stupid
yeah =/ that's the problem, but with downloads that shouldn't be the case, which is why i thought it would be internet based primarily
also: fan art
i do a LOT and i post it on my art website so tonnes of people ask me about the band

I think everything that can be seen as spam should be avoided.
The possibilities on the internet are endless, why stick to the vote vote vote for obscure awards no one cares about?
Why don't you focus on the creative side of the band instead of the commercial side? Why don't you do something with art and photography? Start a group on Flickr or DeviantArt and let people send in their artwork. If it's good enough, it will be featured on the homepages of those sites. Or a new mission for Youtube. Making your own version of videos or something... Make something that can go viral?
Or appeal to the other internetcommunities people are part of. People don't just visit this board. I also hang out on the Mod the Sims website. A lot of people download from that website, so maybe someone who is more talented then me can create tshirts or wristbands for The Sims. That way you can reach a different group that you otherwise wouldn't reach.
The website Cake Wrecks is also popular. Maybe someone who likes to bake cakes (not me, I do cookies...) can make a pretty Mars-cake and send it in so it will be posted and you will reach a totally different group.

Sorry for the possible double-post...
But I get annoyed when I see the same message re-tweeted by the Jared Leto-account, the Hive-account and the band-account. Why am I following 3 accounts if they all say the same? Free Jared! Give him his account back! And give Shannon the passwords for the mars-account, 'cause he sends interesting tweets.
Just don't use ALL accounts as a spam-account. The Hive was for promoting, then keep the spam on the Hive-account.
And yes, less frequent would be awesome. Just use Music Monday. And Follow Friday. Take the rest of the week off

I think the strength of the band has always been that they are approachable, that they feel connected with the fans. That it's personal. Only having commercial messages I think pushes people away. People need to get interested in what they communicate, then the buying and supporting will usually come by itself. So while the need is there to put the direct message out there that there is a variety of goods to buy (CD, single, vinyl, TIW book, tickets etc) it should be less blatent. It can be done in a much more inticing way. Eg if you want people to buy tickets to upcoming gigs well how about tweeting about preparations to the tour and then mention that tickets are still available. Or if you want people to buy the TIW book how about mentioning some "suggestive" comments about what's in the book to make people interested so that they'll then buy it. Like I said, I think they definately should promote what they have, since in the end they need to earn money and the album and single is just out (and yes we all want it to be a success). And having some tweets inbetween that aren't about the selling, well that'd be nice too of course!
^^ agree with Jill (previous post). The mystery, the hidden & crazy stuff. That's what is missing nowadays.

also, i think it was a mistake that the hive started to post under the band's name. this could be just my view and opinion. when i read band's tweet, i don't react to it anymore the same way i did before jared posted from it. or has it been the hive all along but they just decided to keep it quiet at first? i get that jared, shannon and tomo are busy BUT still jared is tweeting from his own account. in my opinion his tweets are better than the band's because he's not pushing us that much. jared does that too sometimes but not as much as the hive does from the band's account. now, i could be all wrong here, but this is how i feel and see things.
so, less "buy buy buy" -tweets and more jared(and rest of the guys) communicating with us from the band's account.

So far I can only say that everyone has done an amazing job trying to push This Is War and Kings And Queens as well. But I think for every country, like _nina_ said, we should try to find the right and proper tools. For example, in Italy the biggest social network is still facebook, while twitter is not that much used, so to reach more people it's more effective fb.
For what concern requesting the single on the radio stations, we have an atypical situation in Italy. We don't have alternative radio channels, and the really important stations are impossible to reach even if they have facebook pages or twitter accounts. They don't care about the viewers! The only ones that do it are the little local stations.
About what sharmz said, in Italy we tried a download day for Kings And Queens but not so many people knew about it and bought the single in different times (next time the local boards should def work better on it!).
And I totally agree with Larissa about the "last" tweets. If you scrolled the tweets coming from the band the 90% are about selling/buying stuff. It's too frequent! I know they are busy w/rehearsals and stuff but they could write blogs, even short messages to share with us.
I don't know why they stopped going on kyte and posting videos, they could even keep uploading the "war is coming" clips, but that's another story.
I will keep thinkin' about it

Hi ..Helios...
We created the Online Echelon (me and my friend Laura @ 30STMNoticias) .... an opportunity for those who can not go to meetings of Echelon. So we spent the day passing information about everything that happens with the band, and once a month we have a meeting via webchat.
what you think about it?
