WHO: The Used, H20, 30 Seconds to Mars, The New Transit Direction, Street Drum Corps
WHEN: August 20, 2005
WHERE: Gibson Amphitheater - Los Angeles, CA
Lunacy Fringe - "Do you want to take me on?"
This tour started off on a bad note, having canceled the first few dates due to Glassjaw pulling out for medical reasons. After the delay, the second show of the tour stopped at Universal City's newly renamed Gibson Amphitheater (formerly Universal Amphitheater).
Openers, The New Transit Direction set the tone for the night, rocking out as all bands on the bill did.
With 30 Seconds to Mars, there was a certain urgency and anticipation in the air. From outside in the lines to the lobby area, all I heard was 'you have to check out this band.' The band has gained this indescribable respect from a dedicated following of supporters for their honesty and shared love for the music. Fans were decked out in the usual Echelon attire - red arrow shirts, black and red band wristbands and homemade clothing declaring their appreciation and dedication to the band.

As the bands' opening sirens blared, people rushed in to their seats and rose to their feet to see what all this buzz was about. Opening with 'Battle of One' the band set the tone for their set and kept it going from there. Going into 'Buddha for Mary,' Jared took his usual run through the crowd, with a trail of fans in tow. From this, the band went straight into 'Attack,' the first single off their forthcoming album 'A Beautiful Lie.' The lyrics in 'Attack' tell two different yet oddly similar stories, one of growth and one of change - both of which carry the same intensity and passion. This was evident on stage as bassist Matt Wachter, sporting a new buzzcut, hammered about the stage, guitarist Tomo Milicevic strummed forcefully along with the pulsating beats of Shannon Leto's drumming. Ending the set with the commanding song 'The Fantasy,' 30 Seconds to Mars delivered what they assert themselves to be - a hard working rock band on the verge of something great.
30 SECONDS TO MARS setlist:
Battle of One
Buddha for Mary
Attack
A Beautiful Lie
The Fantasy

30 Seconds to Mars amassed quite a tsunami of industry buzz well before they had finished recording their self-titled debut, and for good reason. Their debut album is a cataclysmic car crash of progressive rock experimentation that draws on influences as far ranging as Pink Floyd, Rush, and Brian Eno. Keenly piecing together an intergalactic tapestry that harbors elements of industrial, prog rock, and modern alternative, 30 Seconds to Mars ventures well beyond the average boundaries other rock acts choose to limit themselves to. In doing so, these men have taken a daring new step in musical evolution, leaving vast corridors of sound open for the listener to meander down at will. Vocally, 30 Seconds to Mars proceeds to uncover new avenues of melody that such legendary singers as Bono and John Lennon surely helped inspire, yet the passion and heart that radiate from every miniscule whisper or gut-wrenching wail are breathtaking. These mesmerizing vocals are accompanied by some of the most awe-inspiring feats of musical expression captured on record since humans set foot on the moon. Lyrically, 30 Seconds to Mars escapes from the doldrums of introverted self-pity that are common for the modern rock landscape and instead offers an intriguing portrait of a futuristic existence. These space-age themes compliment the group's advanced musical achievements wonderfully. 30 Seconds to Mars has managed to record an album that breathes life into the empty shell that corporate rock has become, and in reanimating an avenue of musical expression that has for many years been on its deathbed, has quite possibly offered the single best rock experience of 2002.

Saturday night at Alley Katz, it was the usual array of crammed bodies and sweaty air. What made it a little different were the rows of just-legal girls lining the walls, cell phones aloft, tiny (and useless) cameras clicking at the one thing that could be seen through the hazy lights: Jared Leto's piercing blue eyes.
Leto -- he of dreamy Jordan Catalano fame ("My So-Called Life" for those who missed it), some respected movies ("Requiem for a Dream," "Girl, Interrupted") and some ugly clunkers ("Alexander") -- was in town this night, but his behavior was anything but movie-star poseur.
As frontman for the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, Leto adopts a different persona than the slacker-cool vibe he emitted during those unfortunate years dating Cameron Diaz.
He screams a lot, with echo-y and guttural rebel yells to illustrate that he is very angry. He also tosses around the f-bomb like a college student who just fled a puritan home.
But truthfully, he and his band aren't an embarrassment. At least not by whoa -- Dogstar standards.
Most of 30 Seconds' output is thrashing, generic rock with the occasional hook ("Attack"). The group's newly released second album, "A Beautiful Lie," is the reason for this tour of hip spots such as Toledo, Ohio, and Sauget, Ill., sometimes playing grimy joints a la Alley Katz and sometimes jumping on an all-day radio fest (the free Richmond show was sponsored by Y101).
But even when it was tough to conceal a snicker at the goofiness of it all, Leto and his three bandmates from the Good Charlotte Refugee Camp pulled out enough authentic moves and sounds to seem somewhat credible. Believe it or not, at least half of the capacity crowd sang along to most songs -- when they weren't snapping farepictures, anyway.
For some, the highlight of Leto's antics was his leap from the rafters into a sea of welcoming arms below -- a risky move for someone not nearly as pretty.
But for those who fondly recall his Jordan days, slouched against a row of lockers, those blue eyes registering . . . nothing . . . it was a subtle lean against the microphone stand that fully rewarded.

THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. An Exclusive Interview With Jared Leto From 30 Seconds to Mars
by Ivana B. Adored. 2002
The frontman of Immortal/Virgin hard-rock band 30 Seconds to Mars may be better known for his acting, but Jared Leto is just as serious about his musical career.
After I saw your band in Atlanta at 99X's Big Day Out, Steve Leeds [new head of Rock formats at Virgin Records] told me he'd had this phenomenal conversation with you, and he was taken by how committed you are to this band. First of all, is this the sort of scenario you expected when you were first recording the album? All the success that we're having right now is honestly more than I ever expected.
What was your expectation when this record came out? Not to sound like the Dalai Lama or something, but I really kind of left my expectations at the door. I'm really acutely aware of the challenges that are in front of us, and this has always been something that we, as a band, have always been driven to do because we are driven to be creative. We really didn't do this, in all honesty, with the results in mind. We've been sitting in that garage and in the rehearsal spaces and writing this record for so many years now.
How many? The recording of the album took three years. And before that, we spent every second we had for six years in the studio working on material and developing what this latest thing was about. My brother is the drummer, and we've been playing together since we were kids. I started on the piano, and he was a jazz drummer. He started playing drums when he was 4? he was a prodigy. And then he stopped playing for many, many years because he had gotten into some trouble and he had to sell his drum set when he was a kid to pay a court fine, actually. I'm just compelled to do what I do with music. It more borders on obsessive-compulsive territory, something I'm just driven to do.
So little of what you get to do at this point is actually playing music, and there are other aspects of being in a band, having a record out and promoting it that I don't think artists are ever given a primer on. For instance, an actor would have a publicist walk them through things, here's how to be in interviews, etc. But for a musician when this is your baby, suddenly you're hanging out in a conference room at a radio station with a bunch of disinterested people. You know, what keeps me going through that is that they don't make you aware of the work, and we never actually thought about that until it was thrust upon us. But what really keeps me driven to continue doing all that stuff and actually be excited about it is the fact that people are experiencing the music and it's becoming part of people's lives. That's what keeps us excited every night. Every time we play a show and people are introduced to the music, or we go to a radio station and we know that it's an opportunity for 30 Seconds to Mars to be heard, that's huge for us. We put our lives into this. We put our hearts and our souls into this. This is something that we've been so dedicated to, committed to and passionate about for so long that we're going to do whatever we have to do to make it work. To make it heard.

FAME´S DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD
Ann Marie McQueen. October 19, 2002
Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts and Dogstar they aren't.
In fact a mention of bands fronted by the likes of movie stars Russell Crowe and Keanu Reeves -- usually labelled musically weak before they get out of the gate -- draws a sort of sigh from 30 Seconds to Mars drummer Shannon Leto, who has a penchant for answering a question with a question. "What do you think?" he asks tiredly.
GENETICALLY BLESSED
Leto's clearly a touch irked at a query about the impact of the band's frontman, who just happens to be his genetically blessed older brother, during a phone interview this week before a gig in North Bay.
Jared Leto is the scruffy haired actor in films including Requiem For a Dream, Panic Room and Fight Club. Just to add to the kind of notoriety this band so desperately wants to avoid, he is also actress Cameron Diaz's longtime boyfriend. And so he, his brother and the rest of this Southern California band -- which includes Solon Bixler on guitar and Matt Wachter on bass -- do their best to hide any mention of the Hollywood alter ego.
UNWANTED FAME
30STM's extensive, clever website turns up a bunch of odd strangers under the heading "Hot Band Pics" while their out-of-focus promo shots show the elder Leto's face as partially downturned or obscured by a camera. But of course, by focusing on this stuff, on how the Jared Leto who wrote all the songs and lyrics on the 30STM self-titled debut doesn't want to be associated with the Jared Leto who is a pretty well-known actor, is to do exactly what the band's members don't want from the writers they talk to.
Ooops.
"The only people who are making a big deal are the press, the media," says Shannon. To the increasing number of non-star-struck fans coming out to their shows, "it's not a thing."
The group has already generated plenty of buzz and invitations to tour with Puddle of Mud and Incubus. They are playing small venues as part of the MTV Campus Invasion tour, which hits Carleton University's Oliver's tomorrow with I Mother Earth, Billy Talent and Pepper Sands.
BOB EZRIN
30STM members are all in their mid-20s and have been moving towards this moment for about 10 years of playing together, shopping their demo around, and wrestling over the recording process, says Shannon, a photographer who shot all the CD cover work.
After finally scoring a record deal, they sought out and happily secured the services of producer Bob Ezrin, who they wanted after growing up listening to his work with Kiss, Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd on The Wall.
Then they spent almost a year sequestered on remote property in Wyoming working on their first release. The result is heavy on the synthesizers and guitar, odd lyrics and Leto's easy-to-take vocals, an offering which has received mixed reviews and invited comparisons to Nine Inch Nails and Tool.
Their name -- a nod to the increasing speed of technology -- combined with their electronic sound and song names including Welcome to the Universe, The Mission and Year Zero, just adds to the other-worldy feel.
The MTV Campus Invasion hits Oliver's at 8 p.m. Tickets for the all-ages show are $22 and can be ordered by calling 755-1111.
